Two $1,000 ISA Scholarships Awarded

Recipients are Alexandra Benigni and Daniel Nagel

The Illinois Sign Association has given out two $1,000 scholarships this year to Alexandra Benigni and Daniel Nagel. The ISA scholarship is awarded to students directly related to ISA member companies and immediate family, and who are attending college and are academically excellent with high moral character.

Alex, of Shorewood, Illinois, is the daughter of Cheryl Grate and the granddaughter of Tony Grate, and has spent her entire life around the sign industry.  Her first trip after coming home from the hospital was to Grate Signs.  When she was young, her grandfather would wheel her around in a hand-cart, showing her the intricacies of the industry and how things are made.

Later, the two of them would work on small projects in the shop together, sometimes even going out to install signs.

This strengthened her love for the industry and sparked a great interest in the legislative side of signs. In her scholarship essay, Alex wrote about the First Amendment pertaining to signage. “Signs and our First Amendment rights are…important to the United States economy.  They allow for companies to compete fairly in the marketplace by representing their product any way they choose; the better the sign, the better the product is represented and sold.  Impressive signs can be found in every economically powerful area of the United States: New York, Chicago, and Las Vegas,” she wrote.

Alex graduated from Joliet Catholic Academy in May and will attend Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in the fall.

Also receiving a $1,000 scholarship from the Illinois Sign Association is Daniel Nagel of St. Peters, Missouri.

Daniel is the son of Daktronics employee Bryan Nagel, who has worked in the sign industry for more than twenty years.

Daniel graduated from Fort Zumwalt High School and is currently attending ITT Technical Institute for a degree in Visual Communications and Digital Entertainment. With this degree, Daniel hopes to add to the sign industry by designing graphics for digital displays.

In addition to the ISA Scholarship, Daniel has received numerous other awards, including the George Washington Carver Award, the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, and a Bright Flight Scholarship.

The ISA scholarship is generously funded by the Central Sign Council and the Illinois Sign Association, both of which congratulate Alexandra and Daniel on receiving this scholarship. We wish you the best of luck in your future schooling and careers.
